The call came into Needham Forest early in the morning. Cassie knocked timidly on Margaret’s door.

“Come in. What in the world, Cassie? You know it’s too early for me to get up…”

“I know that, Miss Margaret, but Mr. Brady’s on the telephone. He say it’s an emergency.”

Grumbling, Margaret made her way up to sitting and Cassie handed her a dressing gown. Running a hand through her hair, she got her bearings and realized ruefully she felt a slight dizziness, the effects of the extra martini she had indulged in the previous evening.

She let out a big deep sigh and headed down to the phone. Seating herself at the telephone chair, she cleared her voice. “Robert?” she said.

“Margaret. Apologies for the rude awakening. We have a problem. Blue Plains contacted me a bit ago.”

“What is it?”

“It appears that Blanche has… for lack of a better term…escaped.”

“What? How is that possible? The woman is bed-ridden for God’s sake!”

“I know. They want us over there as soon as manageable.”

After making the arrangements of what time to meet, Margaret placed the phone back on the receiver and closed her eyes briefly. Struggling up, she called out to Cassie.

“Yes, ma’am?”

She rattled off a list of instructions: coffee, plain toast, Keith getting up and all the rest and headed back to her bedroom to get ready for the day.

Shortly afterwards, Margaret found herself once again barreling down the parkway with Keith at the wheel heading to Blue Plains. There was no cheerful conversation this time and she realized at some point that she was clenching her jaw.

“You do have to admire the old gal for busting out of the place,” Keith finally said.

Margaret nodded. “Yes, in a way I don’t blame her a bit. I just don’t understand how she did it.”

Robert was waiting for them when they pulled up in front of Blue Plains this time. After exchanging good mornings, their party of three approached the door of Blue Plains.

Before they could reach the bell, the door swung open. Dr. Michaels stood at the entrance.

“Hello, hello. Please come in.”

They were all herded into his office. Margaret briefly noted again the elegance of the room and somewhat expensive furnishings in such stark contrast to the rest of Blue Plains.

Seated behind his large desk, the doctor said, “First off, we express sincere apologies that this has happened. We will help in any way possible to find your aunt, Mrs. O’Keefe. Please rest assured about that.”

Robert interjected and asked, “What is being done exactly?”

With wide eyes, the doctor said, “Well, truth be told, it’s a real mystery. We have no idea how she escaped or where she could have gotten to. Is there anyway somebody might have arranged to pick her up or take her from here?”

All looked at Margaret. She squinted her eyes and then turned to Robert and said, “Do you think Lilli Lamb would do something like this?”

“Blanche did have a relative visit a week or so ago,” Dr. Michaels said. “The staff informed me after the visits that the lady was very disgruntled.
